Doctors Can Now Turn to Crowdsourced Treatment Advice
Rebecca MacLary In a teaching hospital or similar environment, multiple opinions on proposed course of action is easily accessible (think the TV show “House”). But some doctors, in rural areas, for example, or ones who don’t have access to multiple medical peers, could really use the tool of crowdsourcing. The New England Journal of Medicine is one example of a crowdsourcing site for doctors.

Medical crowdsourcing The best part of crowdsourcing is that it can be accessed anywhere, anytime, as long as there is Internet access. Doctors can pose a challenge or question to thousands of other doctors worldwide and get collaboration on a medical treatment issue. For example, check out the NEJM site for their “Image Challenge.” This is posted weekly and gathers diagnoses for the image – usually offering 4 or 5 multiple choices.

The American Academy of Pediatrics often put out an electronic call for knowledge and research on a given topic. To date, over 2,500 issues have been crowdsourced by the AAP and similar groups run by federal government and other bodies. Because of this crowdsourcing, many reports have been published discussing the findings. On the patient side of the same coin, many people these days are looking to selfdiagnose, or to discuss their medical problems with people with similar issues. PatientsLikeMe is an online community for patients to get medical advice and support.

Description Doctors around the world can exchange insight and information over the internet. Crowdsourcing is helping more and more doctors research, publish and discuss findings amongst their peer groups. Crowdsourcing sites that provide forums for patients to discuss their medical problems with people with similar issues are raising self-awareness and in some cases leading to self-diagnosis.
