Multilingual Pizza Connection, a successful crowdsourced translation project

TranslateMedia manages the crowdsourcing of PizzaExpress’ Royal Wedding menu translations. In order to welcome all the nationalities heading to London for the Royal Wedding, PizzaExpress asked their 58,000 Facebook fans which languages they would like to see on the menus in their restaurants. The responses were extensive, varied and threw up a few surprises as well. Alongside the more predictable languages such as Spanish, Italian, Polish, Dutch, Russian, Chinese, Welsh, Japanese, Bengali, Arabic, Urdu, Portuguese, Hindi, French, and German appeared a number of ‘spoofs’ such as Cockney, Pirate, Geordie, Klingon and -of course- the Queen’s English. “We were inundated with suggestions, and TranslateMedia, the translation experts, did a great job to ensure all our menus read beautifully, from German to Geordie! We hope that our efforts went some way to welcoming all nationalities to London, whilst commemorating such a special occasion”. Commented Alex Whitelaw, PR Manager for PizzaExpress. TranslateMedia oversaw the crowdsourcing element of the project, managing the translators for the project, who were selected both from PizzaExpress’ Facebook page and their 5,000 international team members, and ensuring delivery of the translations to PizzaExpress in time for the big day.
