Green investment specialist Abundance Generation has officially launched its latest crowd-funding project, designed to raise between £500,000 and £2m to support the rollout of free solar installations in the south of England. As revealed last month by BusinessGreen, Abundance has teamed up with solar installer Padero South Downs plc to issue debentures that will allow people to invest as little as £5 in the company's solar projects, securing expected returns of between 6 and 7.8 per cent over the 20-year life of the investment. The project will see Padero install solar panels on homes in the South Downs area free of charge, offering households the opportunity to generate electricity for free while the investors benefit from the feed-in tariff payments accrued by the installation. Significantly, unlike existing free solar schemes that have seen high net worth individuals and institutional investors secure the financial returns from the installation, the Padero rollout will offer the homeowners the opportunity to invest as much or as little as they like in the project through the Abundance Generation debentures. The company said returns are "variable and will depend on how much the sun shines and the inflation-linked rise in the feed-in tariff", but it predicted that the scheme would offer "attractive, half yearly cash returns for 20

years". "We're really excited about the opportunity to give more people the chance to benefit from solar PV – both for the homeowners who might not otherwise be able to install the panels and for those who get to receive the financial returns," said Louisa Murray, director of Padero South Downs. "This is an important step in the development of the Padero Solar family of companies which we hope to repeat." The project represents the second investment opportunity offered by Abundance Generation, after the company recently launched a similar push to raise up to £1.4m to fund a community scale wind turbine in the Forest of Dean on behalf of Resilient Energy Great Dunkilns plc. The firm said the project had raised over £300,000 in its first month, with investments ranging from the minimum £5 to £50,000. "We believe that the current crisis in the financial system will not be resolved simply by pouring public money into the banks," said Louise Wilson, co-founder and joint managing director of Abundance Generation. "What is really needed is more innovation in financial services, including new ways for people to invest which are accessible to all and are simple and transparent. Above all, Abundance Generation seeks to give our customers control over where their money goes and how it is invested."
