Crowd Funding Gets Local Girl on the Ice
Updated: Monday, 18 Apr 2011, 10:25 AM CDT Published : Monday, 18 Apr 2011, 10:25 AM CDT A local mother is trying a new idea called crowd funding to raise money for her daughter to ice skate at Regionals. Kate Zabinski recalls when she first saw little Michelle as a baby in China. Kate says, "She was nine months old and only 12 pounds. She was not sitting up yet, she was not rolling over." But even back then, Michelle's strong spirit and body was evident. "Within 3 months she caught up every physical milestone a child should have by the time she was one she was starting to walk. There's was no holding back she was just physical phenomenon." At only 4 years old she showed a passion for ice skating, and for nearly a year she's been coached by Thomas Amon, who says she's one of the most talented, intelligent young girls he's coached. Michelle says, “I love jumping the most, but I love spinning too. When I jump I feel like I'm flying." With 4 other adopted children at home, It’s hard for Kate to fund Michelle's dreams. She recalls one time, where they just couldn't scrape the money together. She says, "It was really hard not being able to watch her skate for those few months." Kate researched this new idea called crowd funding. Basically by using social networking sites and special software she is sharing Michelle's story online with friends and strangers. The point is for people to see it and connect it to other people's social networking sites and draw in donations. A stranger from China donated when he saw the story on a Chinese blog.
