Summary School Principal Letecia Foster long knew many of her students at Killarney Elementary were hurting. Over the past five years, increasingly poorer kids have streamed into the Winter Park school, including many homeless children who live a nomadic life in weekly-rate hotels along Lee Road. At any time, 70 to 85 homeless children — about 20 percent of the student body — answer the morning bell.
Description The answer, Foster realized, was to crowd-source a solution to "end hunger on the weekend" for Killarney students.
On Thursday night, about 20 people answered the call to arms. Folks like Tim Proctor. He watched his son grown into manhood during his 26 years living in Winter Park. The fact that Proctor has no children attending the school didn't blind him to the need.
