European Technology Sustainable Chemistry Innovation Plan
Platform for Unveils Open
Europe boasts a world-leading chemical and biotechnology sector which will make a substantial impact on future growth and job creation. The European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem), a forum that unites industry and academia, announced plans to evolve into a Europe-wide network that captures the full benefit of Europe’s strengths in research and a well-connected network for innovation in the chemical and biotechnology value chain.

The plan aims to exploit Europe’s strengths and help bring to market products and services that will shape the lives of 500 million citizens. The keystone of this strategy lies in a collaborative approach that is open, cross-disciplinary, cross-sector and inclusive. The move comes at
a pivotal time as the EU Innovation Union strategy is making major strides in promoting public-private collaborations across Europe. SusChem brings together stakeholders from many different backgrounds to boost sustainable chemistry with a focus on technology, research and innovation issues. It was founded by six European bodies that represented the main stakeholders from academia and industry in the sector: Cefic – European Chemical Industry Council DECHEMA – German Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology ESAB – European Federation of Biotechnology Section of Applied Biocatalysis EuropaBio – the European Association for Bioindustries GDCh – the German Chemical Society RSC – Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) Mission and vision The mission is to initiate and inspire European chemical and biochemical innovation to respond effectively to society’s challenges. SusChem’s vision is a competitive and innovative Europe where sustainable chemistry provides solutions for future generations, based upon pre-eminent knowledge levels in Europe, coming together in a collaborative public-private, pre-competitive collaboration framework.
SusChem’s collaboration innovation SusChem brings together people from across the chemical community and wider society to formulate research and innovation roadmaps that play to Europe’s strengths and address the challenges facing our society. SusChem Board chairman, and Sr Vice-President Bayer Technology Services Klaus Sommer said: “SusChem has built a track record of connecting key industrial partners and offering technologies and products that are vital to many industries. This very specific role across the value chain makes us forefront contributors in major European innovation initiatives such as resource and energy efficiency, raw materials, water and urban living.” There is no one component in the value chain that can deliver comprehensive and timely solutions alone – therefor the whole value chain needs to be engaged and collaboratively work on solutions. SusChem’s 10th stakeholder event SusChem held its 10th Stakeholder Event in Brussels on 17 and 18 April 2012 – a high profile event with anticipated attendance of around 150 delegates. This year’s theme was Partnering for Sustainable Innovation through Chemistry. Delegates will hear how sustainable chemistry can and will transform the European innovation landscape in the coming years: resource & energy efficiency, water management, raw materials, smart cities are all areas where chemistry has a key role to play through strong partnerships.
