Fine Chocolate Art Bars are a Sweet Dream Come True
Artisan chocolatier Robyn Dochterman had a vision of a chocolate bar that was as beautiful as it was delicious. After collaborating with artists and innovative partners in chocolate production and sustainable packaging, the finished bar is ready to make its public debut.
(PRWEB) September 06, 2012 -- Imagine taking a bite out of the Mona Lisa. Chomping on a Chagall. Devouring a Dali. That was the inspiration for St. Croix Chocolate Company’s newest creation: solid chocolate art bars. The goal of chocolatier Robyn Dochterman was to take the experience of enjoying fine chocolate to a whole new level by creating a chocolate bar that is as beautiful as it is delicious. To achieve this goal, Dochterman knew she’d have to put all the ingredients together. She started with a cup of inspiration. Long an admirer of St. Croix valley tile artist Laura McCaul, the chocolatier asked McCaul to sculpt tiles of native songbirds. “When Robyn asked me to make tiles for her chocolate bars, it was literally a dream come true. My love of nature in an edible form—fantastic!” said McCaul. “Next, we knew we needed a stellar chocolate for the bars, and it was important that it be organic,” said Dochterman. Enter TCHO, a San Francisco-based company that doesn’t just buy their beans from farmers in Peru, but works with cacao growers there to create the perfect organic chocolate. Good for them, good for the farmers and good for St. Croix Chocolate Company. A pinch of innovation was all that was needed to create a frame worthy of holding their edible art. Dochterman worked with a designer at Distant Village to create a one-of-a-kind gift box to showcase her vision. “Our customers told us they hated throwing away the packaging from chocolate, so we set out to make a keepsake box,” said Dochterman. “We’re so happy with the result. We think the boxes are really handsome, and the boxes are sustainable, so we feel good about it from an Earth-friendly perspective, too.” To fund the last leg of the endeavor — manufacturing of the boxes—Dochterman turned to “crowdfunding”. She posted the project on Kickstarter.com, a website where everyday people back projects they find compelling in exchange for a reward. The project quickly met its goal with the help of over 100 supporters. “We offered backers chocolate as a reward, of course,” said Dochterman. “But what really amazed me about the response was how positive people were about being asked to be part of this project. It’s very heartening. Backers made it possible for everything to come together.” Art lovers may never get the chance to polish off a Picasso, but now they can savor the thought of munching on a masterpiece at the St. Croix Chocolate Company. The bars will be available at the Marine on St. Croix shop, online at www.stcroixchocolateco.com, and at select fine foods and gift stores beginning Sept. 10, 2012.
