Kickstarting some jazz projects by players old and new

It’s not just young, Web-savvy jazz musicians who are hoping to use the crowdsourced funding website kickstarter.com to finance their recording projects. I see that veterans Roswell Rudd, 76 and the winner of the trombonist of the year award in the 2011 DownBeat critics’ poll, and Dr. Lonnie Smith, the turban-wearing organist who turns 70 this year, are reaching out for funding via Kickstarter. Rudd is seeking to raise $20,000 towards the making of an album of standards to be titled Trombone For Lovers. He has another 36 days to reach his target — so far, about $4,000 in pledges have been offered. Smith is similarly seeking $20,000 in support of his next CD, a live recording to be made at the end of the month with Jeff Watts on drums, and a powerful horn section that includes tenor player John Ellis, among others. Smith has a ways to go, with $1,430 pledged and 43 days remaining in his campaign.

More typical to me of kickstarter’s jazz community is the young saxophonist and recent Berklee College of Music grad Hailey Niswanger. She’s further ahead in her kickstarter campaign than either of the jazz veterans, having received about $4,800 in pledges toward a $16,500 goal. In late 2009, when Niswanger was 19, she was profiled by Nat Hentoff in this Wall Street Journal story.
