Mata thanks supporters

San Antonio designer Angelina Mata, who made her New York Fashion Week debut last spring, thanked her local financial supporters with a cocktail party that featured an edited version of her Manhattan presentation eight months ago. Known for her artistry, Mata presented her New York collection of haute creativity for the first time in S.A. in a tableau setting with models in still-life poses, hair brushed with paint and faces exotically bronzed with makeup. They wore many of her handmade pieces she unveiled at that show, including her tour de force: a sheer gown crafted from organza she had wrapped around rusty barbecue grills and buried with decomposing corn husks and flora to give it an antiquated look. Another gown was created with crocheted vintage doilies that had been coated with latex paint that dripped down the sheer pleated A-line skirt. Once dried, the dress was hammered to make it supple, which also made it look like lace detailing. The evening soiree took place at The Warehouse, a vast and beautifully landscaped event venue and gallery space behind The Monterrey restaurant in the King William Historic District. Mata, whose custom garments are a favorite of many Alamo City residents, thanked them and others who donated money with “crowdfunding” or donations pledged on Kickstarter.com (a website where money is raised for artistic projects) so the designer could put on her New York show last September. “This is my very personal thank you,” Mata said as friends congratulated and toasted to success throughout the evening. “So many people have supported me for so many years by wearing my designs and being there. It feels good to be able to do this for them.” When asked about her signature look as a designer, Mata, who is planning on presenting a collection at New York Fashion Week in three months, said that her mark comes from her love of her craft. “I've been doing this for 10 years,” she said, “and my signature is the joy of the hand, of working with my hands as an artist.” mquintanilla@express-news.net
