Music groups are now resorting to their fans to get some funding (popularly known as crowdfunding) for their new works.
Music groups have already seen and realized what their fans can do for them. Bay Area flutist Meerenai Shim is an example. She ran out of interesting music to play with her chamber ensemble, and she doesn't want any repetitions with her repertoire. So, commissioned a composer to write something especially for her group instead.
To pay for this composer, she started a fundraising campaign at KickStarter wherein she needed to raise $5,000. But through crowdfunding, $5290 were raised plus she even had fans who may still invest further by buying a CD or watching her concerts.
