Summary
Crowdsourcing in manufacturing is only one small but important step. Once an organization collects ideas you have to vet them, have experts prove them to be viable, then evolve them into projects to be implemented.
Description
To overcome barriers to innovation in manufacturing, software analyst Derek Singleton identified a few strategies to make crowdsourcing more mainstream:
1. “Start small and work your way up.”
2. “Protect intellectual property by dividing responsibilities.”
3. “Make it easier to share design files.” The challenge, always, is managing how many files are flying around at any one time.
Hi there - I work for a spring manufacturer here in Houston, TX. I was actually reading Derek's post on crowd-sourcing over at Software Advice here recently. There is a perception of manufacturing as very old-school and often paranoid, in terms of processes and design. That image is not entirely unfounded either but I think that in the new generation of manufacturers there will be more openness to embrace change in order to grow the industry. It'll be interesting to see how crowd-sourcing in manufacturing works!
