We already knew that social media would play a big part in Barack Obama‟s 2012 presidential bid, he launched his campaign with a YouTube video, but unlike 2008, or even the last four years, this time around he will be tweeting himself. Obama will be personally tweeting and will sign each official presidential tweet “-BO”, according to the President‟s official twitter account, which has 8.7 million followers. Up until now Obama has tweeted very little with his staff handling his account. The change to how Obama uses Twitter comes as part of a wider series of changes to the president‟s Facebook page and his @BarackObama Twitter account announced on his 2012 campaign website. Obama for America staff will now be managing both accounts, posting daily updates from the campaign trail, from Washington, and everywhere in between.
According to the Obama for America campaign while the President is focused on doing the job he was elected to do he will be counting on all of those around him to lead the re-election organisation from the grassroots up. “One way we‟re putting that idea into practice is by taking the reins of these Facebook and Twitter accounts. This change will give us new opportunities to make the most of these channels, using them not only to report what the President is doing every day but to connect to the millions of supporters who will be driving this campaign. “We‟ll be asking for your feedback and ideas, updating you on ways to get involved, sharing the best stories that cross our desks, and maybe even retweeting you every now and again,” according to a blog post on the Obama for America site. The campaign is also crowdsourcing for ideas for what people would like to see on the President‟s Facebook page and on @BarackObama„s Twitter feed. Social media played an important role part in Obama‟s 2008 election campaign. Thomas Gensemer, of Blue State Digital, who was behind Obama‟s groundbreaking digital campaign said the 2008 campaign recruited 13.5m supporters and raised $500m via barackobama.com. In office the Obama administration has use social media widely. We‟ve seen it turn to social media to promote its agenda, we‟ve seen Obama give a crowdsourced YouTube interview and more recently we saw the White House picture of the Situation room, from the night Bin Laden was killed, become one of Flickr‟s most viewed pics. What‟s also clear is that social media has exploded since 2008 and the numbers now using Facebook and Twitter have ballooned. It might have been millions engaging with the campaign via social media last time around, but this time it will be tens of millions.
