Description There are things you can do to protect yourself. One is to beware of “private placements” – offers to invest in a business or securities not traded on the stock and bond markets.

This problem may soon get worse. Congress this year passed a law approving “crowd funding,” allowing small businesses to raise money from investors over the Internet without the extensive disclosures now required. The Securities and Exchange Commission is expected to finish writing the rules late this year.
