With the tap of a smartphone, anyone can find the nearest ATM, gas station, or restaurant. But what about nearby defibrillators? Lucien Engelen, founding director of the Radboud REshape & Innovation Centre, answers this question with AED4.US, Rabound’s effort to crowdmap all automatic electronic defibrillators (AEDs).
Engelen sees enormous potential in e-health ventures. “[Crowdsourcing can be] peer pressure used to help patients,” he told the audience at TEDxMaastricht, highlighting a WiFi-enabled scale that automatically tweets his weight. “This could be used for obesity; it could be used to stop smoking … it could be used to get people from out of their chairs and try to work together in some kind of gaming activity to get more control of their health.”
And with AED4.US, crowdsourcing can even help save lives. Check out the brief TEDTalk below for more details.
