Geocentric Crowdsourcing. Or how to put the hands-on the city
Distributed Knowledge, Open Innovation

Tom Erickson, designer and researcher in the Social Computing Group  at IBM's Watson Labs in New York, believes in crowdsourcing as a force capable to bring to citizens the ability to change the landscape of their cities and effectively create a more intelligent and livable environment. In his paper Geocentric Crowdsourcing and Smarter Cities: Enabling Urban Intelligence in Cities and Regions, Mr. Erickson explores the application of crowdsourcing to cities and regions – what he called “geocentric crowdsourcing.”

In his opinion, rather than people as passive subjects of increasingly ‘smart’ systems developed by tech companies, the vision is that smarter cities can offer a variety of ways for humans to act as first class participants, contributing their abilities to sense, analyze and act. Mr. Erickson focuses his research on designing systems that enable groups of people to interact coherently and productively: originally focused on online systems, the scope of his work has expanded to include real world environments ranging from rooms to cities.

Responding to some questions from Crowdsourcing.org, Mr. Erickson explained the concept of Geocentric Crowdsourcing and his practical application to the cities.

Crowdsourcing and the new marketing
Cloud Labor, Crowd Creativity

Crowdsourcing is clearly not going away. Any company that believes it can operate with a closed-walls philosophy is missing the point of social business. The crowd, or groups external to the firm, provide interesting, sometimes path-breaking, sometimes huge numbers of ideas, insights and solutions. Crowdsourcing is part of the future of making and selling things. No question.

Still, there are a couple of questions niggling away at the back of my mind. There are more than two but these two beg an answer.

The first is how do we improve crowdsourcing? We know it's better than relying solely on internal resources for a variety of tasks, from routine to innovatory, but if crowdsourcing is to become a fixed operational resource, a part of the furniture so to speak, then we need to know how to measure and improve the process. That's akin to saying how do we professionalise it.

The second question is where does it lead us to? CNN recently announced it will upgrade its iReport crowdsourced news services. The end result will be a social network for news, a community that simultaneously creates, distributes and consumes news. This makes perfect sense. We are already blurring the line between production, marketing and consumption but we need to think where this is headed in other segments of the market.

The case for and against crowdsourcing (part 2)
Distributed Knowledge

In the first part of this article I described which types of crowdsourcing currently exist and the benefits of crowdsourcing. In part two, I now explore some of the drawbacks of crowdsourcing.

There are a number of key issues to consider when conducting a crowdsourcing project that have the potential to materially impact the outcome. The potential drawbacks of crowdsourcing often stem from the fact that in crowdsourcing initiatives, online volunteers instead of companies own staff members are executing the work. The use of ‘outside’ workers can present some challenges which I'm going to explore accross the following areas to highlight the potential drawbacks of working with crowds.

Can you outsource CRM to the crowd?
Distributed Knowledge

I recently spoke to John Bernier from Best Buy, the discussion about Twelpforce as a highly innovative approach to real-time customer service to learn more about the opportunities for crowdsourcing customer service. More recently I interviewed Gioacchino La Vecchia, Chairman and CEO and a co-Founder of CrowdEngineering who, through his CrowdForce platform, is a forerunner in the development of enterprise-class Social CRM solutions. It would seem that international recognitions by industry analysts Gartner and Altimeter, who awarded the accolades of “cool vendor” and “the one to watch” in Social CRM, preceeding last week’s announcement that CrowdEngineering had closed a $4m Series A Round the crowd may have a big role to play in servicing itself!
