SEC Regulations Barricade The Crowdfunding Floodgates
Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is such a pervasive concept that today more than 175 crowdfunding sites exist online. Seemingly, a new crowdfunding site pops up every other day. So it may be surprising to learn that none of them allow entrepreneurs to raise money in exchange for equity in their business. That's because regulatory organizations like the SEC ban it.

The Crowdfunding Revolution Will Democratize Venture Investing
Crowdfunding

It's no secret that venture capital and angel investing is 'clubby,' dominated mostly by middle-aged men.According to a 2007 study of angel investors in North America, 86 percent were male with an average age of 57. Women didn't fare any better in a similar UK study, where 93 percent of investors were male. A similar trend exists on the entrepreneur side: only eight percent of companies that receive venture capital funding are run by women. While the VC community seems stuck in an old boys network mentality, crowdfunding is radically re-shaping business investment and neutralizing gender bias, for both investors and entrepreneurs.

Let the People Invest
Crowdfunding

There's an emerging consensus that an enormous amount of investment dollars are currently penned up behind SEC regulations over how private firms raise capital. If the floodgates indeed release a flood, that would serve everyone well—Democrats, Republicans, startups, and the small money investors who could then have the kind of access to small companies that VC firms currently enjoy a monopoly on.

It's incredibly rare that I offer an opinion on the application of crowdsourcing (or, for that matter, crowdfunding). There's a simple reason for this: I made my bones observing the phenomenon, not promoting it. Such detachment provides me with the invaluable freedom enjoyed by all journalists: To call a spade a spade.

Crowdfunding Numbers & Industry Insights: The growing wave of democratised finance
Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding challenges traditional barriers to financing and by-passes conventional gatekeepers of investment. Democratising finance and revolutionising capital allocation, the radical diversification in the economic space brought about by the crowdfunding phenomenon is showing no signs of slowing. It has a potent driving force. As social media continues to perpetuate the growth and success of crowdfunded projects, it is clear that platforms are re-instating meaningful connections between the innovators on one hand and their audience on the other.

In the third and final post of this short editorial series on crowdfunding, we focus on the radical changes evolution in this industry is causing. Both in terms of eliminating financial gatekeepers and also the way in which social media engages the crowd as a dynamic and alternative source of funding. It is unquestionable that social media is the powerhouse behind successful crowdfunding projects. Here we delve a little deeper and consider some of the complexities behind this rapidly growing and networked layer of the new ‘sharing economy’.

The SEC and Crowdfunding: A Reader's Guide
Crowdfunding

It's been a big few weeks for crowdfunding. Last week President Obama went on national TV to push for his job's bill, and said that federal agencies need to cut the red tape that prevents start-ups from raising capital and going public. This was followed the next day by a White House blog post which pushed for allowing startups "to raise money through “crowdfunding” – gathering many small-dollar investments that add up to as much as $1 million." Then yesterday a top SEC official told a US House of Representatives subcommittee that she sees benefits to easing restrictions surrounding crowdfunding.

Want to catch up on what's happened? Here's a primer, in rough chronological order, on how this fast-moving story is playing out:
