Cheaper than in-house R&D and more Mother Nature friendly, Sony scores great PR and the electronics giant’s own technology gets repurposed.

Distributed KnowledgeCrowdsourcing continues to gain momentum in the private sector. From Microsoft’s Imagine CupLego’s Mindstorms and from GE’s $200m Ecoimagination Challenge to Sony’s Open Planet Ideas, we’ve seen countless examples of cost-efficient, time saving, and high yield crowdsourcing implementations. While crowdsourcing has gained traction in the private sector as a great vehicle for innovation and customer engagement, it is interesting to observe how the public sector is embracing crowdsourcing as an economically effective vehicle for engaging their constituents.

Distributed Knowledge, Open InnovationLisa Barone’s “7 Ways to Incorporate Crowdsourcing into Your Business” originally published by OutspokenMedia.com recently sparked quite a discussion amongst the online crowdsourcing community. Crowd CreativityWhen you hold the lofty position of being the number one manufacturer of both mobile phone handsets and smartphones with a 13 and 17 point lead respectively in market share, you might think “why change a winning formula”; however for Nokia, innovation is the DNA not just part of it! Nokia maintains a healthy lead in the rankings charts for 2010 as reported by both IDC and Strategy Analytics however with Samsung’s annual sales growth trumping Nokia’s by a factor of over four times, Nokia’s number one position is threatened unless it can improve its annual sales growth figures.
One recent attempt to do this was to make an open call for innovation, inviting, for the first time, the crowd to create a new version of its iconic ringtone, which has been its trademark since 1994.
In partnership, Nokia selected the small Finnish startup, AudioDraft which was founded in July 2010. AudioDraft specializes in contest based challenges that crowdsource music and sound design. The contest attracted thousands of talented sound designers and music producers from all over the world, with Nokia paying $ 10,000 for the winner. The new ringtone will be available on some 100 million devices and will be heard over 1 billion times a day.
