Distributed KnowledgeOlivier Guyon, an optical physicist, astronomer, and 2012 MacArthur fellow, wants to crowdsource planet hunting. The plan is to have amateur astronomers with a Cannon DSLR camera go out and take pictures of the night sky. Using specially crafted software, even DSLR pictures can identify the luminosity of some stars. Guyon plans to create an open-source database with this information, making it easier to identify which stars have planets orbiting around them.

How do you organize ideas and control the quality of what is produced by crowdsourcing? These were the main questions from the audience that followed a discussion at Social Media Brazil, which took place last week in São Paulo. A first for the industry, the social media event provided a forum this year for a good debate about crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. According to Rafael Zatti, creator of Ideias.me, when consumers work together to produce a new product they effectively take part of the process. And in this process the community itself becomes the quality control. “When a project is well structured, the community is self-regulating.”

CrowdfundingIn a really exciting first in the world of crowdfunding, the Rushmore Group which runs private members’ clubs in London has become the first business ever to raise more than £1m using a crowdfunding platform. Based in the UK, Crowdcube is one of the first business finance crowdfunding platforms for businesses to raise equity finance. Crowdcube launched in 2010 as the “next generation of business investment” and offers a new way to fund start-ups and business expansion by providing budding entrepreneurs a platform to connect with ordinary people and raise venture capital.
Selecting Crowdcube for its fundraising platform, Jonathan Downey, founder and owner of the Rushmore Group, opted to use the crowdfunding model over other methods for raising capital needed to expand the business. Sensationally, the Group raised the money in the space of four weeks from 143 investors.
