Crowdfunding a Once in a Lifetime Opportunity

This is the third year in a row I participated in a panel discussion at Womex, the world’s largest world music conference. Musician and cultural activist Alan Bern was also on the panel. He is the director of a band called The Other Europeans, who was selected from over 700 bands to showcase their CD at Womex. This was as much a challenge as an opportunity for him and his band.

Bern, who needed more than $10,000 dollars to fly his 14 member band to Copenhagen, chose to employ crowdfunding as a way to raise the budget. After a 43-day Kickstarter campaign, he successfully raised the funds, sharing some interesting stats and lessons with us along the way.

Bern wrote three posts, with audio and video, spaced across approximately three weeks. He reached out to his first circle of friends and fans via e-mail (450), Facebook (1075), the band’s fanpage on Facebook (531), and another music fanpage (500). Each posting ignited a wave of support, resulting in 138 backers that contributed $10,971 dollars.

Crowdfunding

With crowdfunding continuing to grow in Europe, a new industry body, the European Equity Crowdfunding Association, formed in late May to represent specifically equity- and debt-based crowdfunding industries. Recently, EECA held its first board meeting, so we caught up with the organization's General Counsel and Manager Alessandro Lerro to find out more about the association.

The Road to Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding

Ever tried funding a startup? I've been told that there is a 1 in 500 chance you will succeed (once you've developed a great idea). With this in mind I started looking for funding for MaxClass - a new private social network for education. After we had started development in April 2010 using our own money, we knew we could last a bit longer than a year.  As I think I'm at least a bit smarter than the average entrepreneur (we all do I'm sure), I told myself that good pitch and about 100 meetings should do the trick. We did after all have a brilliant idea.

Le Kickstarter: Crowdfunding the French way!
Crowdfunding

There’s a lot happening in the French crowdfunding industry. Recent announcements have included KissKissBankBank partnering with the French Post as their official fundraising and artist discovery platform and Ulule who have just launched a new feature, a presale option supporting products coming to market once they have raised the required level of capital. I was really keen to understand more about how the crowdfunding industry is developing in general, and in particularly, how it’s doing in France. I got in touch with ten founders of crowdfunding platforms to learn what I could. In all, I spoke to: Smiti Arbia from carnetdemode.com, Nicolas Bailly de touscoprod, Alexandre Boucherot d’Ulule, Hortense Garand from babeldoor.com, Michael Goldman from MyMajorCompany, Nicolas Guillaume from Friendsclear, Angel Ramos de revenonsalamusique.com, Vincent Ricordeau from KissKissBankBank, and Yannick Robert from Mywittygames.com. In a series of three articles, I am going to look at different aspects of the topic. In this first part of a three article series, I look at what makes France different?

My count reached twenty-nine crowdfunding platforms currently operating in the French market, and there are probably more I’m unaware of. This is not to say the country is experiencing an extraordinary phenomena: crowdfunding is booming in Europe and across the world. Who hasn’t heard of Kickstarter’s success? Kickstarter can proud of having reached the dizzy heights of now raising in the order of a US$1m a week, all in less than 2 years in business, for new business ventures and special cause projects. One of their projects, the tiktok lunatik iPod Nano watch holder raising close to $1m alone. In Europe, France among other countries has not yet reached the point of such growth. Why is that?

The giant pharmaceutical Roche increases its call for Open Innovation
Open Innovation

Roche, the world leading pharmaceuticals and diagnostics company, has established a strategic partnership with Swedish Uppsala BIO's open innovation program, BIO-X, expanding its network of more than 80 independent partners that complement its pharmaceutical R&D capabilities.

Roche has a long history of open innovation. Since 1999, the company has been running a global innovation program based on umbrella agreements with key partners. The cooperation agreement announced this Thursday, 15 September, 2011, is the first in Europe and will link the Bio-X's researchers with the Roche's global innovation network at least for three-years.

The Uppsala BIO open innovation program is a government-funded initiative that aims to promote R&D and link science sector to industry. BIO-X identifies and supports ideas in the research community that can satisfy unmet medical needs or solve problems in healthcare, drug development, and diagnostics.

Crowdfunding the Czech Way

As crowdfunding becomes an ever more popular method for raising funds online, new sites continue to emerge that appeal to localities previously unexposed to the transformative fundraising model. One such site is Fondomat, the first crowdfunding enterprise in the Czech Republic. It’s also the “cheapest crowdfunding website to use for both creative projects and charity-based fundraising in the world,” boasts Fondomat co-founder Conrad Watts. Crowdsourcing.org spoke with Watts to get the inside scoop on his new crowdfunding venture.

Duolingo and the Power of Human Computation
Cloud Labor, Distributed Knowledge, Tools

Luis von Ahn wants to translate the web — all of it. To call him ambitious is an understatement. In a TED Talk that was originally uploaded to YouTube in April 2011, von Ahn introduced Duolingo, a crowdsourced translation project, and boldly proclaimed that with one million users, the site could help to convert the entirety of Wikipedia into Spanish in 80 hours. Free of charge. Even with a slightly more modest prediction of 100,000 users, the task would be completed within five weeks. What von Ahn, an entrepreneur and computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was proposing, and what Duolingo is now beginning to offer in a private beta, is a crowdsourced translation service that provides every volunteer with a service of their own. What he envisions is a tool that will not just revolutionize the Internet, but education itself.
