Microsoft invite the crowd to build Windows 8 together
Distributed Knowledge, Open Innovation

With a sympathetic "Welcome to Windows 8", Steven Sinofsky, President of the Windows Division at Microsoft, launched the first post on the “Building Windows 8” blog inviting programmers around the world to crowsdsource the development of the new version of the world dominant operating system. Notifications of posts to the blog will be announced on Twitter stream @BuildWindows8.

“We've been hard at work designing and building Windows 8, and today we want to begin an open dialog with those of you who will be trying out the pre-release version over the coming months”, wrote Mr. Sinofsky, who has been the President of the Windows Division at Microsoft since September 2008, responsible for the development and marketing of Windows, Windows Live, and Internet Explorer.

According to Mr. Sinofsky, Windows 8 reimagines Windows for a new generation of computing devices, and will be the very best operating system for hundreds of millions of PCs, new and old, used by well over a billion people globally. “Building the next release of Microsoft Windows is an industry-wide effort that Microsoft approaches with a strong sense of responsibility and humility”, he wrote.

CitySourced: Crowdsource Your Government
Distributed Knowledge, Tools

In the midst of an unstable global economy, governments are striving to accomplish more with fewer resources. Additionally, citizens are looking for governments to embrace the government 2.0 movement, encouraging increased communication, feedback, and transparency of allocated resources. It is a lofty goal, but one that we feel will increase the effectiveness of government while concurrently improving citizens' quality of life.

CitySourced is a real time mobile civic engagement platform; with our free mobile apps, we allow citizens to report non-emergency issues back to City Hall. By identifying these civic issues (public safety, quality of life, environmental issues, etc.) with a smartphone, citizens are able to snap a photo, shoot video or record audio and easily report issues directly to the city's appropriate department. In addition, our mobile reports provide additional data points about the problem, most specifically the GPS location. From these reports, the city can then respond directly to the user to keep citizens informed of all relevant progress.

What crazy things can you do in Brazil with the crowd?
Crowdfunding, Distributed Knowledge

On Monday, in a packed convention hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil, over three hundred practitioners, eager entrepreneurs, and curious bystanders’, watched, listened and scribbled intensely as the 1st International Conference on Crowdsourcing, Communities and Co-creation got underway. The full agenda accommodated a line-up of crowdsourcing professionals who presented their business models, provided real-world examples and shared insights into the must-knows and the dos and don’ts of crowdsourcing.

The conference itself was the idea of Shaun Abrahamson and Marina Miranda from Mutopo when a few months ago, following calls for assistance and participation, Marina’s large network of connections in Brazil, the US and in Europe started to quickly produce: sponsors, a venue, speakers and then ticket sales.

Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding have been increasingly on the agenda in Brazil over the last twelve months and this was Brazil’s first chance to gather in one place to meet face-to-face to look for the answers to the one question that appeared to capture it all -- the central issue -- “what crazy things can you do in Brazil with the crowd?” As Shaun Abrahamson opened the conference he quote Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, “While the last five years have been about getting connected, the next 5 years are going to be about all the crazy things you can do now that all those people are connected”. There seems to be a lot of crazy things you can do, for sure!
