Quality Design Should Be a Priority
Crowd Creativity

If you want to start a business nowadays, the best money you'll ever spend is to build your own identity that you'll promote afterwards. But when you are a newborn firm with no identity background, how should you go about doing that? There is a misconception that you should have great content to grab potential customers’ attention. While that’s undoubtedly true, at DesignInARK, we’re convinced that poor design can generate immediate distrust. Content is actually a less immediate priority than design, which is responsible for that make-or-break first impression that’ll either appeal to users or drive them away.

We want to help companies discover their identity. DesignInARK realized how powerful it is to ask freelancers for advice and to have more possibilities at the early conceptual stages of launching a business venture (versus soliciting those opinions post-launch). This is one thing that traditional creative agencies can’t offer. Sure, those agencies are great when you are on the same wavelength with the designer working on your brief, but that’s not always the case. In my mind, it’s always better to have options, to have more designers giving you their vision or interpretation of your project.

Inside Threadless.com
Crowd Creativity

In 2000, a college student named Jake Nickell entered a t-shirt design contest hosted by Dreamless.org, a (now defunct) online forum for web programmers and graphic designers. The winning design would become the official t-shirt of a Dreamless event in London. Out of about 100 entries, Nickell’s design won the contest.

Jacob DeHart, another college student with a passion for design, also entered the competition. Though his design didn’t win, he and Nickell (who had met through the forum) began to talk about how much fun it was to participate in the contest. “Dreamless was all about art and design and a lot of artists on there had 'battles' and shared/critiqued their work with each other,” wrote Nickell in a blog post entitled ‘
Threadless.com: The History’. “It was all around a very creative environment for hobbyists and professionals alike to unleash some creativity in their free time.” That got the two thinking: what if they held an ongoing design contest where the winning t-shirts would go on sale? Soon, Threadless was born.

Nine things you need to know if you are building your own crowdfunding platform
Crowdfunding

In this third and final part of my three-part series exploring some of the aspects entrepreneurs need to consider when designing a crowdfunding platform, I explore the eight essentials of crowdfunding. The context for my posts has been a close look at the French crowdfunding market place and in-depth interviews with ten owners of French crowdfunding platforms. In my first post, I presented a few factors that I felt made it more difficult for French crowdfunding platforms to achieve the same levels of explosive growth that are being experienced by crowdfunding platforms in the US such as IndieGoGo, Kickstarter and RocketHub. In the second post,  I took a closer look at the different models that are being tested in the French market.

I learned a lot from my interviews with the founders of 10 French crowdfunding platforms. While many of the opinions were quite diverse there was also clear convergence on a common theme: they all held a passion for crowdfunding and a shared belief in its potential. For those of you that have also caught the crowdfunding bug, for this third post I have shared a list of “crowdfunding essentials”, gleaned from the experts that should help you pursue your crowdfunding goals. Thanks again to all the interviewees   (in alphabetical order): Smiti Arbia from carnetdemode.com, Nicolas Bailly de touscoprod, Alexandre Boucherot d’Ulule, Hortense Garand from babeldoor.com, Michael Goldman from MyMajorCompany, Nicolas Guillaume from Friendsclear, Angel Ramos de revenonsalamusique.com, Vincent Ricordeau from KissKissBankBank, and Yannick Robert from Mywittygames.com.

CloudFactory, a Cloud Labor platform for creating work opportunities for people in developing nations
Cloud Labor

Developed by two idealistic Canadians and two open-minded Americans, the Cloud Labor platform CloudFactory, lauched this week in San Francisco, is an ambitious project based in Kathmandu, Nepal, with an objective to bring new opportunities of work to people in developing countries to help fight poverty.

Crowdsourcing.org had the opportunity to interview Tom Puskarich, VP Business Development of CloudFactory while he was in San Francisco for the launch of the platform at TechCrunch's Disrupt conference. We learned that CloudFactory is following a similar model to established providers such as CrowdFlower, Microtask and others. CloudFactory allows businesses to design virtual assembly lines for all types of digital work such as inputting data from handwritten forms, extracting data from images, flagging bad content and categorizing things. However, “The main difference between CloudFactory and its competitors is its free self-serve toolset that allows users to set-up their own workflows” Tom Puskarich, VP Business Development, informed us.

Germinator Picks More than a Pickled Pepper

Sometimes you even have to be innovative when it comes to supporting innovation. That's what we found so inspiring about a soon-to-launch Citizen Science project tentatively code-named "Germinator", another brainchild stemming from one the hubs of the crowdsourcing world, sunny San Diego, CA. This new distributed knowledge platform will be looking to create a crowd of backyard gardeners that it says will "revolutionize what we eat, how we eat and what we mean by horticulture", all through crowdsourcing!
