CloudFactory, a Cloud Labor platform for creating work opportunities for people in developing nations
Cloud Labor

Developed by two idealistic Canadians and two open-minded Americans, the Cloud Labor platform CloudFactory, lauched this week in San Francisco, is an ambitious project based in Kathmandu, Nepal, with an objective to bring new opportunities of work to people in developing countries to help fight poverty.

Crowdsourcing.org had the opportunity to interview Tom Puskarich, VP Business Development of CloudFactory while he was in San Francisco for the launch of the platform at TechCrunch's Disrupt conference. We learned that CloudFactory is following a similar model to established providers such as CrowdFlower, Microtask and others. CloudFactory allows businesses to design virtual assembly lines for all types of digital work such as inputting data from handwritten forms, extracting data from images, flagging bad content and categorizing things. However, “The main difference between CloudFactory and its competitors is its free self-serve toolset that allows users to set-up their own workflows” Tom Puskarich, VP Business Development, informed us.

A Call for Crowdsourcing in Brazil's Public Sector
Cloud Labor, Crowdfunding, Tools

Brazil is in the midst of an economic boom, byproducts of which include falling unemployment rates, less people below the poverty line, improved welfare packages and empowered consumers. As more money circulates, the country's economic situation continues to improve — and this the upward trend looks set to continue.

With an economic backdrop that has raised confidence levels, an opportunity prevails for those companies that are ready and willing to innovate and push the boundaries of creative design to new levels. Having survived the brutal economic conditions of recent times, there is a new sense of optimism among Brazilian companies for the first time since 2008 as they face their foreign competitors.

One of the advantages purported by the forgers of the new crowdsourcing economy is the cost advantage provided by greater levels of savings through labor arbitrage. Digital workers are becoming increasingly connected, stocking the armory that drives this new global workforce. The crowdsourcing model provides cost savings tied to manpower, research and development for foreign companies — among many other benefits — but here in Brazil, where the economy is booming, the scenario is slightly different. Concern for cost reduction exists, obviously, but Brazilian companies that incorporate crowdsourcing practices in their business model do so largely because those practices project a higher value throughout the company's business model, connecting all the market players in an integrated manner beneficial to the company.
