With a sympathetic "Welcome to Windows 8", Steven Sinofsky, President of the Windows Division at Microsoft, launched the first post on the “Building Windows 8” blog inviting programmers around the world to crowsdsource the development of the new version of the world dominant operating system. Notifications of posts to the blog will be announced on Twitter stream @BuildWindows8.
“We've been hard at work designing and building Windows 8, and today we want to begin an open dialog with those of you who will be trying out the pre-release version over the coming months”, wrote Mr. Sinofsky, who has been the President of the Windows Division at Microsoft since September 2008, responsible for the development and marketing of Windows, Windows Live, and Internet Explorer.
According to Mr. Sinofsky, Windows 8 reimagines Windows for a new generation of computing devices, and will be the very best operating system for hundreds of millions of PCs, new and old, used by well over a billion people globally. “Building the next release of Microsoft Windows is an industry-wide effort that Microsoft approaches with a strong sense of responsibility and humility”, he wrote.

Distributed Knowledge is the most discussed type of crowdsourcing, with the category’s top 15 platforms garnering nearly nine million social media mentions during the examined one-year timeframe. There’s a reason, after all, that the cocktail party definition of crowdsourcing is “Wikipedia, for everything.” Speaking of the community-authored encyclopedia, Wikipedia ranks highest in “absolute buzz” among Distributed Knowledge sites, racking up 2,216,124 total mentions. Social news aggregator Digg comes in a close second with 2,118,646 mentions, followed by social news site Reddit, the self-proclaimed “front page of the internet,” which garnered 1,747,223 mentions. Discovery engine StumbleUpon and TomTom, a GPS navigation company that crowdsources map info, round out the top five with 1,247,871 and 476,283 mentions respectively.

Articles on crowdsourcing seem to spread one message: every firm should use the ‘power of the mass’ by tapping into a global pool of online voluntary resources. I do not deny that crowdsourcing is a beneficial concept to a number of firms, but there is also a different story to tell. I have observed that little or no attention has been paid to the drawbacks of crowdsourcing. These disadvantages result in unexpected costs that have the potential to wipe out some or all of the benefits of crowdsourcing.
In the first part of this article I describe which types of crowdsourcing currently exist and the benefits of crowdsourcing. In the second part (published tomorrow), I explore some of the drawbacks of crowdsourcing.
