Last week, we kicked off a new feature on Crowdsourcing.org--our first live chat with a big name in crowdsourcing. For our first conversation, Carl Esposti moderated a discussion on Open Innovation with Nicholas Selk, Director of Professional Services at Brightidea. Selk manages all client programs for the open innovation and ideation leader, dealing with such big names as GE, Cisco, American Express and Kraft.
Here's a few of the highlights from the hour-long discussion:
Crowdsourcing.org held a very insightful and provocative live chat on Monday on the topic of establishing the regulatory framework for the new crowdfunding system just signed into law by President Obama in the JOBS Act. Much thanks to Jeff Bullock who volunteered to draft the following highlights and organize the transcript into the easier-to-read format at the end of this post.
As a result of this week's live chat, the SRO working group learned that there is some confusion around whether and when platforms can charge a fee for facilitating crowdfunding. We invite you to join members of CFIRA's leadership group and our securities attorney's for next week's live chat to clarify this issue.
Specifically, platforms have the following abilities:
• Until July 4, 2012, platforms may not facilitate any form of "solicitation" or advertising of raises;
• From July 4, 2012 until January, 2013, platforms may only facilitate "Regulation D" offerings, must limit all offerings to accredited investors, and cannot charge a fee for that facilitation;
• After January, 2013, platforms may offer crowdfunding offerings (not Regulation D offerings), and may charge a fee to facilitate those offerings.

It was a busy and fruitful week with well-attended meetings held in NY on Wednesday, April 18. The group agreed on two important mandates: first, the efforts to work with the SEC to guide the development of a framework for the regulation of the U.S. crowdfunding industry; and second, the need to work to coalesce the industry in order to form a united group that could represent the needs of the industry, beyond the development of a workable regulatory framework.
In this week's Live Chat we will be providing updates on the progress that has been made including details of meetings held with FINRA and the SEC.

Our weekly crowdfunding live chats are becoming one of the hottest tickets around as the gears start turning to put the new investing framework in place. Our third live event was held this past Monday, just a few days after members of the Crowdfunding Intermediary Regulatory Association met with officials from FINRA and the SEC.
During this week's Live Chat, we will be providing an update on CFIRA's progress working with the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and other affected governmental and quasi-governmental entities to help establish industry standards and best practices.
We will also be discussing efforts to unite a broad-based coalition of industry participants from within the growing crowdfunding community to ensure the credible development of the industry, including a commitment to the highest ethical standards.

As President Obama is expected to sign the JOBS Act into law at 2pm EST on April 5, 2012, a leadership group consisting of equity and debt crowdfunding platforms and industry experts including legal, securities and SEC experts, have mobilized to explore the development of a self-regulatory framework for the crowdfunding industry. The JOBS Act requires that all equity and debt crowdfunding platforms be a member of a national securities association. This leadership group will explore the various paths to meet that requirement in ways that protect investors and support a vibrant industry.

Monday, September 26 is going to be a big day for us at Crowdsourcing.org and, of course, for all our daily visitors. As we approach the first anniversary of the launch of the site – we launched at CrowdConf2010 on October 4 last year – looking back over the year we have acheived a lot and had a great first year, establishing a great following and earning the respect of many people we admire and many we don't yet know.
I’ve been a little quiet on the blogging front, but it hasn’t been because I took the summer off! Apart from my relocation from Dallas back to L.A. (how pleased am I about that!), trips to give presentations at various crowdsourcing conferences in Europe and a trip to São Paulo in August to present at the first Latin American conference on Crowdsourcing, we have been really busy working on a number of important initiatives.
Tomorrow mid-morning Pacific Time, all being well, we have an exciting new site to unveil. We have given the site a massive overhaul and we hope everyone likes it – we think you will! Over the next few weeks we will be introducing a range of additional features including live chat, featured videos and great new whiz-bang technology for a whole bunch of user-friendly options such as social sign-up, log-in, share and comments, etc.
