Tribevine, the Story: How the Internet is Fragmenting the Mass Markets into Long Tails
Tools

A bit over three years ago, a few of my friends asked me to help with a startup idea they were contemplating. The thing wasn’t really about crowdsourcing; to be honest, I don’t quite remember exactly what it was. In any case, while pondering launching this business venture, we realized that there’s a problem in the world that’s partly created by the web.

The problem is the fragmentation of interests and related information. While there’s more information than ever, peoples’ interests are fragmenting as they become aware of different alternatives as a result of that information. Nowadays it’s easy to scratch a surface, but it’s not easy to take a deep dive. Smaller interest groups especially are not well served. Yet the interest groups are fragmenting. In essence it’s about the masses transforming into many individual long tails, a phenomenon enabled by the internet.

Bridging Mass Customization and Open Innovation - MCPC 2011

Conference logo wide

The MCPC conference series started out in 2001 as a bi-annual conference devoted to mass customization & personalization. The content has broadened in recent years, including also customer co-creation, user innovation, and other strategies of customer-driven value creation (hence, MCPC = Mass Customization, Personalization, and Co-Creation"). In 2011, the conference will bridge MCPC with a topic that has driven and inspired the field since several years: open innovation.

Open Innovation Vs. Co-creation
Open Innovation
Obvious first question is ‘Does Open innovation and Co-creation need to be put against each other or even put together?’ Not really, unless you are already wondering about the differences! You question if there is a common ground. Or simply you want to use these terms and be on the same page with someone else.

Let’s attempt theory of elimination......

Can you outsource CRM to the crowd?

I recently spoke to John Bernier from Best Buy, the discussion about Twelpforce as a highly innovative approach to real-time customer service to learn more about the opportunities for crowdsourcing customer service. More recently I interviewed Gioacchino La Vecchia, Chairman and CEO and a co-Founder of CrowdEngineering who, through his CrowdForce platform, is a forerunner in the development of enterprise-class Social CRM solutions. It would seem that international recognitions by industry analysts Gartner and Altimeter, who awarded the accolades of “cool vendor” and “the one to watch” in Social CRM, preceeding last week’s announcement that CrowdEngineering had closed a $4m Series A Round the crowd may have a big role to play in servicing itself!

Extreme Value Theory 101 or Newsweek Researching Minimum Wage on Mechanical Turk
Cloud Labor

Last week, Newsweek published an article titled The Real Minimum Wage. The results "showed" that Americans are the ones willing to accept the lowest possible salary for working on a task. The conclusion of the article? Americans are more desperate than anyone else in the world.  What is the key problem of this study? There are many more US-based workers on Mechanical Turk compared to other nationalities. So, if you have a handful of workers from other countries, and hundreds of workers from the US, you are guaranteed to find more extreme findings for the US. Why? To put it simply, you are searching harder within the US to find small values, compared to the effort placed on other countries.

Ways to use crowdsourcing to increase innovation
Duolingo and the Power of Human Computation
Cloud Labor, Distributed Knowledge, Tools

Luis von Ahn wants to translate the web — all of it. To call him ambitious is an understatement. In a TED Talk that was originally uploaded to YouTube in April 2011, von Ahn introduced Duolingo, a crowdsourced translation project, and boldly proclaimed that with one million users, the site could help to convert the entirety of Wikipedia into Spanish in 80 hours. Free of charge. Even with a slightly more modest prediction of 100,000 users, the task would be completed within five weeks. What von Ahn, an entrepreneur and computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was proposing, and what Duolingo is now beginning to offer in a private beta, is a crowdsourced translation service that provides every volunteer with a service of their own. What he envisions is a tool that will not just revolutionize the Internet, but education itself.
