CrowdfundingCrowdfunding, the latest way for start-ups to raise capital in order to launch their products/services, has enjoyed quite a bit of attention recently. Instead of looking for angels and investors to plough large sums of money into their businesses (and be eligible for a return when the company has future liquidity events or IPOs), many would-be entrepreneurs are taking the crowdfunding route. This makes great sense in many ways, one of the most important being that the company founder(s) maintain total control over the business, allowing them to adhere closely to their original ideas and visions.
I first came across the concept of crowdfunding a couple of years ago when I discovered Kickstarter and watched a short video made by the guys who were trying to launch the social network Diaspora, a viable alternative to Facebook that allows users to maintain full ownership of their content. I was so impressed by the enthusiasm of the group and the initiative shown by these really young guys (and the fact that I have children of a similar age) that I donated to the project. This made me wonder what makes other people donate to crowdfunded projects.

For anyone deciding to use crowdfunding to get their projects off the ground, a question ultimately arises: “What will help me fund it successfully?” The debate is on, and we’ve had a chance to talk about it with Matt Finlin. Matt is a young film director who has successfully funded his amazing documentary Below New York on Kickstarter last summer. As Matt himself calls it, Below New York is a “love letter, a personal essay” to New York and its great subway artists. Matt requested for $3000 to finish the shooting and the production of the documentary and within a little over a month the amount was gathered.

Ever tried funding a startup? I've been told that there is a 1 in 500 chance you will succeed (once you've developed a great idea). With this in mind I started looking for funding for MaxClass - a new private social network for education. After we had started development in April 2010 using our own money, we knew we could last a bit longer than a year. As I think I'm at least a bit smarter than the average entrepreneur (we all do I'm sure), I told myself that good pitch and about 100 meetings should do the trick. We did after all have a brilliant idea.
