Our weekly crowdfunding live chats are becoming one of the hottest tickets around as the gears start turning to put the new investing framework in place. Our third live event was held this past Monday, just a few days after members of the Crowdfunding Intermediary Regulatory Association met with officials from FINRA and the SEC.
I have identified four different models of crowdsourcing activities: wisdom, creation, voting, and funding. There’s isn’t one best way to do it – and many organizations use a combination of 
these models to meet their objectives. Social media tools for engaging and capturing the work of crowds include: wikis, custom platforms or web sites that facilitate voting, rating, giving feedback, adding content, or funding. And, you can use social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, to support engaging crowds to participate in the activity.
It's no secret that venture capital and angel investing is 'clubby,' dominated mostly by middle-aged men.According to a 2007 study of angel investors in North America, 86 percent were male with an average age of 57. Women didn't fare any better in a similar UK study, where 93 percent of investors were male. A similar trend exists on the entrepreneur side: only eight percent of companies that receive venture capital funding are run by women. While the VC community seems stuck in an old boys network mentality, crowdfunding is radically re-shaping business investment and neutralizing gender bias, for both investors and entrepreneurs.
One of the tenets of the open source software movement was that armies of coders and testers would fall-in and self organize driven purely by intrinsic rewards. This was driven by the notion that they could not only build it better, but that closed and restrictive practices were not in everyone’s best interest! So, it would seem that if you could harness the intrinsic motivations of this special breed of individual and further reward their performance, you might just have an unbeatable business model…..maybe uTest has discovered that model?
I was keen to find out what made uTest’s model different and, from the looks of its top name client list, what was underpinning its obvious success. I recently interviewed Matt Johnston, uTest’s Chief Marketing Officer, who shed some light on uTest’s interesting business model.
The discrete landing of PopTent in Brazil last month was an indication of a long-term strategy to conquer the large South American market. From the clear and simple room located at the elegant area of Jardins, Sao Paulo, the two co-managing directors of PopTent Brazil, John deTar and Peter Lau, are planning investments in the region of $ 1 million over the next six months. A considerable amount for a company specializing in crowdsourced video production company, even for one whose client list boasts a string of Fortune 500 brands and top agencies. Poptent specialize in producing commercials and other video assets through a social network of more than 35,000 videographers in over 120 countries.
The decision to set-up shop in Brazil was a made in 2010, over a bottle of beer, during a meeting of Poptent’s board and has been almost one year in the planning. It’s not that Poptent takes big decisions lightly, in fact, the beer memorialized the fact that Poptent had enjoyed success with one of it’s large clients, Anheuser-Busch InBev, the leading global brewer well known for its popular American brand, Budweiser. After the huge success of the Dude campaign in United States, they decided to test the model in Brazil, where AB InBev owns the brand Skol, the leading beer in the Brazilian market and the world's third-best selling brand. This was the force behind the creation of Poptent Brazil.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will miss a July 4 deadline to issue a number of JOBS Act regulations — including one that would allow advertising on private securities offerings — SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro told a U.S. House oversight panel on Thursday. The tight time limits imposed by the JOBS Act “are not achievable,” stressed Schapiro.
