Distributed Knowledge, Tools
I’ve been fascinated for some time by the leverage that comes from distributed expertise. Building a board, whether of the Advisor or Director variety, is about finding the experience outside of your four walls that help you know what you don’t. And done well, this can mean the difference between life or death for any venture.

Crowd Creativity, Distributed KnowledgeAfter two prior successful campaigns, firstly calling on the crowd to create a 55-second film that illustrates the meaning of “Chevy Runs Deep” and following that up with a campaign called “gets its kicks" where people were asked to write a script for an iconic 30 second film which captures the unique spirit of the original Route 66 and Chevrolet, Chevy have once more turned to MOFILM to produce filmic stories that captures the next 100 years of Chevy spirit -- 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of Chevrolet. MOFILM is a global community of filmmakers that worki with leading global brands. “We want filmic stories that capture the shared moments of life and the role a brand like Chevrolet could play over the next 100 years”, explained the briefing.
Chevrolet and MOFILM continue to develop their relationship working together with worldwide producers to redeem the values of a brand which is closely linked with American history and one that has had a huge cultural impact globally -- After all how many other brands have been mentioned in over 700 songs? Chevrolet was founded in Detroit, in November 1911, by racer Louis Chevrolet and General Motors founder William C. “Billy” Durant, who developed cars that quickly earned reputations for performance, durability and value.

Open InnovationLast year LG Electronics, the world's second-largest manufacturer of television sets and one of the world’s largest electronic conglomerates, known for its use of top Korean music and film stars and its stunning TV spots, launched its first open communication forum called the Life's Good lab. Its aim was to intensify the interaction between the company and their consumers in Brazil and Latin America as a whole and to also infuse the company with fresh ideas. The initiative was a success building a community of over 118,000 fans on its Facebook Page who generated more than 15,000 ideas. This initial success provided the backdrop for LG Electronics to explore further ways of using crowdsourcing and social media to engage its audience. This year, LGE have chosen to use their social media outreach to promote Korean culture by using their Facebook fan Page to launch a video contest
LG has been using Facebook as a platform to connect with its audience while, at the same time, collect new ideas. The next step, according to the company, is to keep in touch with the fans of LG and to create a place where they can express and post not only their ideas but expressions about the brand.
To explain better what this strategy means for the company I talked to Paulo Santamaria, responsible for Regional Digital Marketing at LG. Santamaria said that the objective of the strategy is to revitalize the LG brand and to improve customer preference. He wishes to emphasize LG’s brand image as young, passionate and energetic. “Our target demographic are the younger generation, fans of good music, the generation that is really attached to technology, growing up in the new social media culture”.

CrowdfundingCrowdfunding, the latest way for start-ups to raise capital in order to launch their products/services, has enjoyed quite a bit of attention recently. Instead of looking for angels and investors to plough large sums of money into their businesses (and be eligible for a return when the company has future liquidity events or IPOs), many would-be entrepreneurs are taking the crowdfunding route. This makes great sense in many ways, one of the most important being that the company founder(s) maintain total control over the business, allowing them to adhere closely to their original ideas and visions.
I first came across the concept of crowdfunding a couple of years ago when I discovered Kickstarter and watched a short video made by the guys who were trying to launch the social network Diaspora, a viable alternative to Facebook that allows users to maintain full ownership of their content. I was so impressed by the enthusiasm of the group and the initiative shown by these really young guys (and the fact that I have children of a similar age) that I donated to the project. This made me wonder what makes other people donate to crowdfunded projects.

CrowdfundingObtaining the right source of finance at the right price is one of the biggest challenges faced by entrepreneurs. Currently, a wide variety of funding options are available to expand or start their business initiative. One out-of-the-box funding solution that has emerged in the recent years is the phenomenon of ‘crowdfunding’.
For centuries, family and friends have been one of the most common sources of early-stage seed capital. Crowdfunding is the natural extension of this model, enabling fundraisers to connect through social networks with a larger, online network of friends, colleagues and other people that are simply just into their idea and want to help them.
Courtesy of social media and crowdfunding websites, everyone from start-up entrepreneurs to the champions of social causes are now able to build interconnected networks more easily and more effectively than ever before. By leveraging their own personal networks to spread the word about the project to potential contributors through word of mouth, email, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, they can tap into existing communities of potential contributors, to launch and promote their campaigns.

CrowdfundingMany excellent technical ideas never become a reality because the odds of obtaining funding from a traditional Angel investor, venture capitalist or lending institution are like hitting the lottery. Going to “friends and family” as sources of seed funding may not be an option for you, and maxing out your credit cards is just a bad idea. So what other options are available?
FundaGeek is a crowdfunding resource created expressly for technical innovation — we focus on commercial projects based on technology, as well as basic research projects at universities and research institutions. Our site differs from crowdfunding platforms that center on creative projects like music, art and film; at FundaGeek, science and technology reign supreme.

CrowdfundingClay Shirky is an American writer, consultant and teacher on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies — at least, according to Wikipedia, the crowdsourced encyclopedia for which he serves as an advisor. Shirky is also the author of Here Comes Everybody (2008) and Cognitive Surplus (2010), two books examining the results, ramifications and potential of aggregated individual action.
Crowdsourcing.org recently spoke with web guru Clay Shirky about the JOBS Act, which President Obama signed into law on April 5. In the transcript — available after the jump — Shirky explains why he “would love to be able to offer essentially wholehearted support of the crowdfunding law,” but has several reservations about the regulatory relief embedded in the bill. (Spoiler: A lot comes down to the SEC’s interpretation of the law, which is ostensibly scheduled to conclude in the first few days of 2013.) Shirky also discusses Kickstarter’s present dominance in the crowdfunding space, the vagaries of pre-JOBS Act law in relation to crowdfunding, and the effect of the JOBS Act on the current startup ecosystem and traditional venture capital.
