Lisbon Hosts First Portuguese Crowdfunding Event
Crowdfunding

On September 28, 2011, the city of Lisbon hosted the first international crowdfunding event in Portugal. To the 400 attendees and webcast viewers, the event introduced the concept of crowdfunding in its various forms, its potential, requirements and risks, focusing on two of the most successful cases in Europe, Symbid and Crowdcube.

Pedro Oliveira, professor in Catolica Lisbon and founder of PPL (Crowdfunding Portugal) kicked things off with a general intro to crowdfunding, followed by Korstiaan Zandvliet’s presentation of Symbid, a reference equity crowdfunding case from Holland. Symbid is an equity-based online investment platform that enables individuals to directly invest in start-ups or existing ventures in exchange for an equity stake in the company. With investments ranging from as little as €20 to as much as €2,500,000, just about anyone can invest through Symbid.

Edit Huddle: The Crowd as Editor
Tools

Think about your favorite blogs, whether they’re political, tech, or news blogs. If they publish frequently, chances are their posts have errors — something is misspelled, the grammar is wonky, or there’s a broken link. Even at blogs with attentive editors, mistakes slip through. Thing is, even if you’re not an out-and-out grammar Nazi, those irritating errors suck. They’re distracting. They make the blogger and the blog look bad, and they attract a flood of commenters who seem to thrive on pointing out errors, detracting from more substantial conversation.

Bloggers, rightfully, are more focused on generating and disseminating quality content than they are on catching every single trivial error. Blog readers want to read clear, error-free posts and the grand majority of them look to the comment section for something more meaningful than “You spelled ‘accidentally’ wrong. Again.” So what’s the solution?

An ingenious application of crowdsourcing: Fix reviews grammar, improve sales!
Distributed Knowledge, Tools
I have been doing research on the economic impact of product reviews for a while. One thing that we have noticed is that the quality of the reviews can have an impact on product sales, independently of the polarity of the review. A review that is well-written tends to inspire confidence about the product, even if the review is negative. Typically such reviews are perceived as objective and thorough. So, if we have a high-quality, but negative, review this may serve as a guarantee that the negative aspects of the product are not that bad after all.

Groupon Endorses Crowdsourcing: A Win For The Crowdsourcing Industry
Cloud Labor

Groupon’s decision to award Clickworker.com a substantial contract to lead a large-scale, global translation and optimization project in a number of languages was a landmark award for the crowdsourcing industry. Clickworker’s win was a win for Clickworker and a win for the industry!  Not only was this award significant in terms of it being an endorsement of crowdsourcing as a competitive delivery model for outsourced services by the global Internet coupon giant, but the fact that Groupon went public with the announcement was in itself momentous!

Last week I spoke with Clickworker’s CEO, Wolfgang Kitza, to not only congratulate him on his company’s win but to also find out more about Clickworker’s strategy and to learn more about what was needed to support the adoption of crowdsourcing by global brands.
