Crowdsourcing.org recently interviewed Ken Clark, co-chair of the Arizona Competitive Districts Coalition, which was founded to provide the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission with support for two important aspects of redistricting via crowdsourcing and a web platform called ArizonaRedistricting.com. First, to act as an idea generator for the Commission, and second, to serve as a watchdog to enhance transparency.

After evaluating machine-based sentiment products and talking to experts in the field, we determined that effective machine-based coding—for the short, often cryptic, Twitter tweets we sought to understand—remained a challenge. We’ve been using an approach that relies mainly on crowd-sourced workers to code the sentiment of tweets on various topics, from specific chatter about Google and Apple during SXSW Interactive, to the broad public mood about weather and gas prices.

Aaron Koblin is an artist specializing in data and digital technologies his work creations of digital art formed from real-world and community generated data. His projects have been shown at international festivals including Ars Electronica, SIGGRAPH, OFFF, the Japan Media Arts Festival, and TED.
Aaron’s work represents some of the best examples of how masses of otherwise innocuous information can be processed to create beautiful, but equally complex visualizations of data derived from thousands of individual actions. Aaron has also been experimenting with the aggregation of data derived from the collective actions of individuals.

Samasource offers a “private crowd” as a model that fits between traditional outsourcing and crowdsourcing; the former providing advantages delivered through the organization of qualified labor and the latter delivering the greatest labor arbitrage advantage. Samasource employs a dedicated workforce, managed off-shore by trained service partners that provide quality control in designated work centers. Janah describes Samasource as “a distributive work company that employs crowdsourcing principles.”

Africa Unsigned , founded by Pim Betist, is a crowdfunding platform that aids local artists by taking on the challenge of music production and promotion. This is achieved once the targeted budget is reached through the small amounts of monies that are given by fans and supporters via the website’s platform. Betist previously founded Sellaband, a popular creative crowdfunding site that was the first to adopt a crowdfunding model to assist budding musicians.

These platforms offer more efficient
capital movement than traditional funding sources, and are able to significantly scale the social impact because, according to Josh Tetrick, Founder and CEO of 33Needs, it inherently builds up a community of people that become supporters since it creates a connectedness that is not possible through venture capital and angel investors. The investor is excited about his or her investment and will work hard to spread the word and raise awareness through social media and their own personal network.
