It depends on the crowd. Ideally, you want to take your question/proposition/project to a crowd that will already be interested in the subject matter, instead of attempting to gather a crowd for this sole purpose. If you find such a crowd, who is knowledgeable and passionate about the topic surrounding your project, you will most likely find them to be extremely helpful.
