The fact that "The chief cause of small business failures- after management error - is lack of capital." is of major concern considering that statistics from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills indicate that small and medium businesses comprise almost half of the UK’s Gross National Product and are a rapidly growing sector of the economy. Thus, the general economy is substantially affected by small business economics and their critical dependency on adequate capital resources . This is why real alternative sources in seed finance are needed to facilitate entrepreneurial ventures that have difficulties raising capital from traditional sources such as bank loans, venture capitalists and business angels; one available option is crowdfunding.
This paper aims to assess crowdfunding as an option available to small commercial businesses in the U.K for raising capital. Chapter 1 examines the models currently available for crowdfunding with reference to the subject literature. Chapter 2 will analyse four major lending platforms with different models to create a comparison with “traditional methods” of raising capital. The pertinent features compared are that of interest rate, return on investment, administration fees, availability, time to facilitate, default rate and other non-financial benefits. In Chapter 3 data was collected from the opinions of entrepreneurs, investors, interest groups and regulators. Chapter 4 offer’s recommendations for the development of crowdfunding in the U.K and explore the possible benefits to entrepreneurs, investors and the economy...
